S’s Family Story
Our good friends from Poquessing Middle School of the Neshaminy School District have reached out to The Foundation with the hopes that we could provide immediate financial assistance for S and her family.
S (age 13) was left homeless following a house fire that also displaced her mother (Mrs. P), step-father, two brothers (ages 8 and 4), one sister (age 8 months), aunt, three foster children that the aunt is caring for (ages 3, 4 and 5), one cousin (17 years old) and her one-month old baby. Fortunately, no family members were injured in the fire.
Following the fire, the family stayed in the Lower Bucks Homeless Shelter for one evening and then moved into two rooms at the Hampton Inn located in Bensalem. The mother did have some level of renter’s insurance in place which has been covering the cost of the hotel rooms.
Initially, it was believed that the repairs to the home would take approximately one month to complete, at which point the family could move back into the residence.
Unfortunately, that initial time frame has changed. The family is now being told that the extensive damage will take approximately seven months to complete.
Further exacerbating the situation; the family has learned that the homeowner/landlord now states that she is planning on placing the house on the market following the completion of the repair work.
Subsequently, the house will no longer be available for the family to rent. The renter’s insurance will cover an additional two weeks of rent at the Hampton Inn and then the family must vacate the premises by May 29th.
Unfortunately, due to the family’s limited resources, the plan is to send S to live with her biological father in Philadelphia. Subsequently, S will be separated from her mother and two brothers for the first time in her life. She is “heartbroken” that this seems to be the only viable option for the family.
Her only desire is to stay with her mom and brothers and finish the school year at Poquessing. S is an extremely likable young lady and excellent student who is invested in her education.
She has earned a spot on the Honor Roll each marking period this school year. Although she wants to complete 7th grade at Poquessing, she accepts the fact that she may need to move to help her mom and brothers.
She would, of course, send for S once she has secured appropriate and stable housing. If she was able, she would keep S with her and not relocate her to Philadelphia.
Mrs. P. has contacted various resources to try to secure housing and keep her family intact. She has made an application with Bucks County Housing Link, however this can be a lengthy process and often families are placed on a waiting list. Although Mrs. P is employed, her current salary does not afford her the luxury of an easy solution.
Please consider making a donation in support of S and her special family that will provide immediate financial assistance for permanent housing rental and will keep S with her Mom so she can finish out the School Year where she is excelling at Poquessing Middle School.
