Adrienne Cox is the mother of 8 year old twins Jadeyn and Jordyn who both have Autism Spectrum Disorder. Adrienne is a stay at home Mom who goes to any lengths to make sure that her girls (and their older sister) are well taken care of. Adrienne never stops advocating for her children to make sure their physical, educational and emotional needs are met. She is a kind, caring person who truly deserves a special day just for herself.
Leola “Domonique” Howell is the mother of 4 year old Rylee who has severe food allergies. Domonique has cerebral palsy and relies on a wheelchair to get around. Domonique does not let her physical challenges keep her from being a great Mom and advocate for herself and others with challenges.
Domonique and Rylee have been homeless in the past, through no fault of their own. Domonique took her story to the press and challenged those in the system that told her she couldn’t get housing. Domonique and Rylee are now living in their own apartment. Domonique is a fantastic mother to a bright, happy daughter.
Madeline Scott is the mother of 11 year old Stori who was born with special needs and requires 24 hour care. Madeline has dedicated her life to caring for Stori who cannot take care of herself. Stori relies on her mother for feeding, bathing, dressing etc.
Madeline at times provides all of Stori’s care by herself when a home nurse is not available. When I invited Madeline to this lunch she was so excited to be invited as she rarely gets a chance to do anything for herself. Madeline is a wonderful Mom who wants the best for Stori and provides her with the best care a mother can give.
Dawn Weems is the aunt of 6 year old Tyra who has Sickle Cell Disease. Tyra’s mother has had her own challenges and has not been able to care for Tyra for the past year. Dawn has provided Tyra with excellent care since assuming her role as caretaker. Tyra has frequent medical appointments to monitor her health and visits with her mother weekly. Dawn is doing a wonderful job of caring for Tyra and deserves to be recognized for the fantastic aunt that she is.
S.M. is an amazing Mom. Her son, T.M. is a very resilient 3 year old, who was born prematurely and has been in and out of the hospital since.
Even though T.M. has experienced many medical challenges (cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal), he is such a pleasant child and always seems to be smiling. T.M.’s progress is really impressive—over the past few months he has begun eating by mouth and he (and Mom) hope he will no longer need to use the NG tube that he has relied on since infancy for his nutrition.
This progress is really the product of S.M.’s serious dedication to her son. Despite her own challenges related to health, finances, family, housing, and transportation, S.M. puts her son’s need before her own.
She really ensures T.M. gets to his MANY medical appointments and stays on top of all the medical orders/ changes that his health team makes.
S.M.’s ability to manage all of his and her own needs on top of not being from the US originally is even more impressive. I think S.M. would really appreciate this lunch and she definitely deserves it!
Wanda Hernandez is the mother of Christian Hernandez (18 years) and Christianity Hernandez (16 years). She moved with her family from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia in 2011, to receive better medical care for Christian. He has Duchesnnes MD, dysphagia, non-ambulatory, chronic respiratory failure and uses a trach, ventilator, gastronomy tube and wheelchair. Christian needs assistance with all of his activities.
Mrs. Hernandez was a nurse in Puerto Rico. She is always looking out for the welfare of her children. She doesn’t miss any of Christian’s medical appointments and is always advocating for his rights and well being.
She takes care of him, supports him, and takes Christian to different events and helps him to feel calm, positive and comfortable despite his condition. Wanda is really looking forward to attending the Lunch at the Capital Grille.
