We hope you and your families are enjoying the last few weeks of summer together.
Our team at The Barkann Foundation has come up with a program that is predicated on supporting many local families who will be referred to us in the coming weeks by the social workers who will identify families who have children in the hospital or serious medical needs that require an abundant amount of doctor’s visits on a daily and weekly basis.
In many cases, the child’s medical needs require Mom and Dad to be at the hospital for prolonged stays away from home and their other children.
Parents everywhere are trying to balance their work schedules while providing the adequate support and time to help their children with their online learning when school starts in just a few short weeks.
Imagine being a single parent who has to take care of a child or children who have complex medical needs while trying to provide support for your children who are home trying to navigate online learning in many cases on their own?
The Barkann Foundation’s Back to School Family Enrichment Program will provide these very special local families with tutoring and mentoring sessions in addition to financial assistance for school supplies and meals for children who will be at home rather than being at school due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Your support and generosity will allow our chosen team of tutors to spend time virtually with elementary and middle school aged children while helping with their academic needs and serving as mentors for children who need our attention and extra support during these very challenging times.
We will also provide each family with financial assistance to purchase school school supplies and meals to help take the burden away from parents whose time is very limited due to their child’s medical needs.
We know times are tough for everyone, please consider making a donation in any amount that will make direct impact on children and their parents who need our support to help with the many challenges that lie ahead for their families especially in regards to their educational and nutritional needs.
If you have any questions regarding The Back to School Enrichment Program, please contact Michael Barnes (Executive Director) at mike@thebarkannfoundation.
Thank you for your continued friendship and generosity to The Barkann Family Healing Hearts Foundation.

After a 37 year career in the chemical industry, first in industrial research followed by years on the business side, I retired from the Dow Chemical Company and began my teaching career.
I always wanted to be a teacher (I did a lot of internal and customer teaching during my Dow days) and decided to pursue an education degree in the evening.
I first thought I would teach high school science (since I studied Chemistry in the 70’s) but fell in love with the science of reading and reading acquisition.
I am currently a grade 1 through 8 math and reading remediation teacher with Catapult Learning.
Catapult places teachers, guidance counselors, etc., into Philly area private and catholic schools to satisfy Title 1 and ACT 89 federal and state requirements.
I’ve been with Catapult for 3 years, teaching at the same school. I facilitate small group instruction ranging from 1 student to 6 or 7 at a time.
Education: As it relates to teaching, I have a BS in Education, Summa Cum Laude, from Temple University. My PA certification is Pre-K through 4th.
Grades and Subjects for Tutoring: I have the most experience with 1st through 8th in both reading/English and math.
Time and Days/Evenings Available for Tutoring: I will be available during the evenings Monday through Thursday, after 5:00 pm.
